White Witch

Well, 'secret project', aka finishing the Parade Handmaiden from the first Star Wars prequel I started in college didn't pan out. I didn't have enough fuschia dye for the lining and backing, so now it's back to Edwardian corset and White Witch.

I finished the largest panel for the White Witch and started the next panel (about half the width of this one). I think they are too skinny so I've expanded this panel by a row on each side and will be making the back of the skirt a little wider (it's smaller than the belt underneath, been bugging me.) It weighs 1 lb and 14 oz.

Now, I finalized the length once I got in my platform boots. Tilda Swinton is 5'10" and I'm 5'00". The horizontal line across my hips wasn't doing me any visual height favors, so I decided to add platform boots. They are 3.75" in the heel and 2.5" in the platform. I did a comparisson shot for funsies.

I'm hoping to go to Tandy Leather in the next couple of weeks for the corset material, I've been testing metal and paper clay for the lion crown, and I have the fur for the shawl sourced and am ready to order it. 6 months left til Dragon*Con!

  2. Question: Why did you go with 19g 3/16? That's going to be a somewhat flimsy ring for anything you're going to move in. Also, after close-up examination of photos of the actual movie prop, I'm going with 16g 5/16". Did you remember to turn the ring direction 90 degrees at the hipline? The bodice rows run vertical, but the skirt rows run horizontal. What's the total weight of the maille at this point? nwyvre.weaveywrks@gmail.com if you'd like to reply directly. I'm a semi-pro mailler.

    1. Well, when I started this project I had to do a lot of guesswork as the only chainmailing I had done at that point was a piece of jewelry. I made several samples, and then counted how many rows there were against the length of the thumb, and against mine, and it worked out pretty close... to scale, anyway. I'm quite a bit smaller than Tilda Swinton. I do remember having to compromise on the size of the ring as they didn't have what I needed, and I could have gone a little bigger, but I think that size ring would have been too big on me. I haven't found the 19g to be flimsy at all actually. And yes, of course I did turn the rings the other direction :) I DID look at the pictures before I began, you know ;) I had to make up quite a bit on how to do those gores while going in the other direction.

As of right now I have the big panel done, 1 gore, and 3 of the 4 skinnier rectangles, it weighs in at 4lbs, 3oz

    2. And actually, the belt part runs horizontal, and the skirt part is vertical. This picture shows it well. http://costumes.narniaweb.com/exhibits/wwbattle2.JPG
