(Attention Deficit... ooh, shiny...) I tend to either get disinterested, frustrated, or run out of time to finish projects so I end up side-lining them and then never getting back to them.

I decided to pick Merida back up, (I had last posted this one in 2014) she was living on my bedroom floor for awhile, then when I moved realized I was pretty close to actually being done. Since I won't have any of my new costumes done for C2E2 and it's earlier this year, figured I'd give it another go.

I think I got discouraged when I got in a bad wig just before the last con I planned to wear it to. It's very hard to tell color online, not to mention finding a good, natural Red. I ordered one that looked good off of eBay, but many sellers were using the exact same picture. I wrote them, and they claimed it was their picture, but of course, they probably lied. This is what I ordered originally.

Looks great... except what I got was bright clown orange, and it was all set into a black foundation and wefting. I even tried to dull it down with dye, but it didn't work well. So, beware sellers using this picture, it's probably not what you are actually getting.

Next, I ordered this one from an eBay store that operates out of CA, not China. The pictures are kind of crappy and fuzzy. The wig I ordered, Electra, is very long and curly (may or may not be too thin depending on the volume one is going for). It has a light beige colored foundation, a hard front, and all the wefts on the crown are crimped and facing forward for volume. I wrote them and they claimed color #27C was a perfect Merida color and it's called light ginger. It's the brightest red they have in their color chart.

I found the red to be more of a bright strawberry blonde as opposed to a true bright red. The wig at least had a few different colors to it, so it at least had a natural look to it, so I decided to try and dye it to a brighter, natural shade.

I decided to look at Arda Wigs tutorial on dyeing wigs. It's for their fibers, dying white fibers, but I used it as a guideline. Since there was no orange iDye at my fabric store, I decided to get Tangerine RIT Powder, and some Cocoa Brown so it didn't go too orange.

Using a large lobster pot I use for dyeing fabric, I started heating it on a portable induction cook top I have. Note, I've had a hard time finding something to reliably get large pots of water boiling, and I will not dye in the kitchen. I mixed about half the packet of Tangerine and just less than half of the Cocoa. Based on Arda's information, the cocoa really turns more of a red than a brown. I pulled a strand of hair from the back of the wig and dipped it in the dye pot, and it was too RED red, so I threw in the rest of the Tangerine. My strand took 15 minutes to get to a color I wanted (Pull it out and dry it from time to time to get an idea of the color) so I threw the whole wig in. I guess the water got hotter, because after less than a minute it looked dark, so I pulled it out, rinsed it (cool water, bit of dish soap), and then dried a strand and it looked perfect.

It came out a very pretty 'natural' red. I haven't decided if I'm going to try and make it more orange or leave it like this. My Merida costume I'm going for historically accurate and realistic as opposed to living cartoon.

Next step, will be making the wig cap smaller and resetting the curl!Verdaerahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02623257976488143439noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-639743988911632694.post-70626503898318654412016-02-03T20:06:00.000-08:002016-02-03T20:06:16.067-08:00TaurielI had posted last year about my conundrum studying Tauriel's green deerskin outfit from The Hobbit. Well, I had gotten another of WETA's books from the movie which confirmed the conclusion I sort of came to when studying her outfit that they did indeed make a whole version and a short jacket version.

On the left in the 'dress' version she wears in Thranduil's chambers and the cell scene, on the right she's wearing a jacket with a separate skirt. They are implying that it's the same jacket, but they didn't want the extra skirt layer when she's wearing the raw silk overcoat. I'm guessing the 'dress' version was decided on later, and since the other version is covered by the cuirass, they needed to make a full version.

The 'dress' version has a panel down the front of the skirt that has binding on it, which is missing from the removable skirt. Also, I can tell from the close up in the Cloaks and Daggers book that the binding is silk, where the jacket version is binded with the same suede as the jacket. I've decided I'm making the dress version of this, and if I have enough suede left over, I will make a short jacket. I figure I can wear my cuirass over the dress and most people won't care about the extra line of binding down the front, since I don't see a point in making the removable skirt just for that.

I got two large hides of green deerskin to make this out of! I also found a sort of iridescent nylon fabric to make the undershirt out of. (And as you can see, the Weta Tauriel necklace!)

I also have the WETA Daggers for later!

Back to the jacket, I've patterned the body of it, and I'm making a full mock up, since I don't want to make any mistakes on the leather, and I'll work on the sleeves when that's done. I'm really loving the collar on this.

I've also been working on a pants pattern. Tauriel wears leather pants, the best pictures of it are from the Weta figurine, such as this:

So, I've made a version in stretch denim. I had a little fun and put some of the Elven leaves from her bracers on the back pockets.

So right now I have a lot of patterns, mock ups, props and supplies so I hope I start seeing something wearable real soon!

Hopefully I'll get to it soon, been a bit busy getting ready to move! I'm really excited about it because, while it's still in town, it'll be away from the major road/bar neighborhood I'm in right now. My sewing room will be smaller, but I won't have to share it and am moving storage elsewhere so it'll house mostly my sewing, cutting table and dress forms. We'll see how that goes!

My current project is Hoth Leia from Empire Strikes Back.

I had started this last year, but got frustrated with patterning issues and was distracted by prettier, shinier things and put it away. Needless to say, with The Force Awakens coming up in December, I need a cold-weather costume. I have Rebel Legion troops at the release, the Symphony, and the Blues Hockey game, so my interest is renewed. I had been researching for awhile and besides my own notes and Rebel Legion, I use Padawan's Guide as a resource. I started with the vintage Kwik-Sew Pattern 2624 that was mentioned as being used by another costumer.

Looking at the picture, it didn't look grossly oversized and had similar seam lines except for the princess seams. For once, there were measurements on the envelope that were smaller than I was (I'm the size Carrie Fisher was back then, perhaps with a bigger bum :p ) Looking at the pattern pieces, I cut out the XS anyway because it all looked larged.

Honestly, I am not sure I can recommend this pattern. I thought I'd save myself the hassle of drafting it from scratch and would just be altering. It might have been less work to draft this from scratch!

I had to add the princess seams, I had to take maybe 3 inches off of all sides to make it remotely fit, shorten the crap out of the bodice, restructured the armscye's, and wanted to rip my hair out trying to resolve crotch fit issues. I must have tweaked that thing 20 times before ripping it out and "draping" it, and finding out the rise wasn't right at ALL. It honestly might be better to frankenstein something more fitted together.

USING PHOTOSHOP AS A TOOL

When I recreate a piece, I basically save and capture every picture I can find from every angle I can find it in, and drape and pattern my piece based on my observations and notes. I usually spend months drooling over/obsessing over all the details well before I even start the project. The things I note when I am studying are:

-What seams are there
-Where do those seams fall on the body
-What understructure do I need to make the silhouette

Since I usually do movie costume recreations, I'll go through and capture pictures, especially during movement so I can see all the angles. I watch every special feature I can get my hands on as well as B-Roll footage that comes out on the net. Exhibit pictures are my best friend (since they rarely have these exhibits in my neck of the woods). I built my Alice costume before the movie came out on Exhibit pics alone.

Once I have my mock-up built, I like to try it on and take pictures of myself in it recreating poses from some of the best reference pictures I have. It's a good idea to marker in your seam lines so they are visible when working with the pictures. Simply speaking, you can use any photo editing program that lets you work in layers. I have an older version of Photoshop, CS2.

Here's an example. The angle could have been better on the camera, but I'm camera shy and had someone helping me. Usually, I set up a tripod and take dozens of pictures until I get the right angle and pose. The blue ribbon you see on my chest was a proposed seam adjustment I knew I had to make. Since this is a lot of white on white, I copied my reference picture (never work on the original!) and added dots to all the lines I was trying to match up. I did the same on the picture of my muslin. (The large round circles you see on Leia's arm were me testing a theory that her quilted patches were perfectly circular on the curves.)

Next, I layered the two images together.

My Leia reference picture, I changed the opacity of the layer so I could see through her but still see her shape. (By 'change opacity', I mean to change how solid or see-through the image is, which in photoshop can be done in the layers menu). I 'Transformed' this layer to be my size and shape. It is important to transform the layer, not change the size of the overall image. To transform, select the layer you want, and select Transform from the Edit menu, or simply hit "CTRL+T". Boxes will appear around the selected image. You may have to zoom out. You will want to hold down the shift key and drag the box from a corner. Holding shift will keep your image to scale. Adjust your reference image until it is your same height. Look at the face, the facial features should approximately line up. Also try and line up things like shoulder, waist, etc.

Now, I lucked out in that I am basically the same build as Carrie Fisher; she's only an inch taller than me. More often then not, we are not the same proportions as the actors who play our characters. All that matters in recreation costuming is that proportionally, your lines match up. I have seen many good costumes not reach their potential because the seam and hem lines just didn't hit where they should. For instance, the quilted squares on Leia's vest may be 3" square on her, but on someone taller they may need to be 3.25" to have the same number of squares in the vest. The final measurements don't matter so long as everything is proportional.

How do we fix it? I don't have pictures of this part, but basically you will resize your reference layer to match you (not the other way around) to see where the lines hit on you. When you held shift while transforming, it kept the image to scale. If the reference is taller, shorter, skinnier or up a size or two from you, you can skew the reference layer whichever direction it needs to go to make it match. If you run into a problem where, say, you are more short-waisted then them or have longer legs, you can marquee select part of your reference layer (that is the tool that looks like a box with dotted lines) and drag it over part of the image, say, to the waist, and CUT the selected piece (CTRL + X). Create a new layer and PASTE (CTRL + V). Now you have two separate halves which you can stretch and shrink independently until you get something more proportional to you.

Based on this, I was able to make the necessary adjustments to my seam lines until they lined up more closely with hers, and I will have a more accurate product for it.

Another use for photoshop:

Creating an image like this really helps for reference when designing your pattern. You can brighten and sharpen images until you can see the details you want. I drew a few lines on here and used my protractor (holding it on my screen, though there's probably a more technical way to do it) to get the angle these stitches go. You can even go so far as to make a layer with a 1" grid, scale your reference photo to the approximate size you think you need, and print off a reference to start your pattern with! (Be sure to erase anything you don't need to conserve ink!) Doing this saved a lot of time and guesswork when starting the pattern for these quilted pads.

I hope this info proves useful :)
Just a small teaser before Dragon Con ;) I'll post my build info once I debut it!Verdaerahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02623257976488143439noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-639743988911632694.post-67571677550413978742015-07-28T04:56:00.002-07:002015-07-28T04:56:50.647-07:00Dragon*Con Countdown updateI know I've been a bad little blogger this year. I've been having a slight crisis deciding how much information to share online since I've had a few incidents where I've been taken advantage of. I had someone steal my Hogwarts skirt picture to sell copies on Etsy, I had a chinese company steal the Alice embroidery design I shared for free for fellow costumers, and I had someone create a DeviantArt account solely to tell me she 'just hoped I didn't debut my White Witch costume at D*C this year because she'd hate to be in the same dress as another girl', then proclaimed she was entering hers in the same contest I've been planning to enter mine in for 4 years. Needless to say I've been reluctant to put info of my build out in the net until after said contest is over (because so far, this is my biggest build!)

Anyway, I've had to strike a few things from my list this year because White Witch takes first priority. After 4 years, I am so ready to debut it and move on. I didn't get to the Luna wedding outfit but I now have earrings to wear with my school uni. Tauriel, if I get the leather coat and wig finished, will be just bare bones. I'm on my first coat pattern draft, and I have the leather, wig materials, pants pattern and base boots. If I can finish the wig and coat it'll be just wearable enough for Dragon*Con.

The White Witch is coming along and WILL be done this year. I finished the leather bodice, have the lion mane shawl together, acquired some props, and am working on the crown and the wig. I'll share all that after D*C because I'd like to post the finished product first!

But first, I can't leave without posting something shiny, so here it is...
THE CHAINMAIL SKIRT IS FINISHED. Almost 4 years of work, 82,000 rings, it weighs 7lbs, 2oz.Verdaerahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02623257976488143439noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-639743988911632694.post-81674104928286302192015-05-04T16:43:00.000-07:002015-05-04T16:44:01.657-07:00Tauriel and the Disappearing Skirt DebateSometimes, I feel that movie costumers pull some evil tricks on us recreation costumers!

I am currently in the process of my final research before drafting the coat for my Tauriel costume from The Hobbit (more on White Witch later... plugging along on it, but not making my research public until after Dragon*Con) but I've hit a little snag. Parts of Tauriel's costumes like to disappear.

Tauriel basically wears a couple of costumes that are layered up in different ways, and it is also sometimes inferred in the movie that she's wearing one costume under the other, for instance, she enters Bard's home in her green jacket, leather bodice, and travelling coat, but when she's healing Kili, she's suddenly in her crinkled tunic look, as if that outfit was underneath the other one. In the book, they do admit they had removable skirts because they didn't want a lot of skirt layers.

Here's my predicament. I intend to make the version with the green deerskin jacket, and with the leather bodice once I get to it.

Now, here's the description of this green jacket from WETA's Desolation of Smaug Chronicles book:
"Beneath her coat and cuirass Tauriel wore a fine deerskin green jacket. The jacket had long sleeves made in four parts, exquisitely faggoted together by Katherine Pepperell in gently curving lines down her arms.
The original line of the costume had a smaller collar. Fran liked the line, but wanted a bigger collar, which turned out to be a very good call. From concept to delivery, the entire costume had to be created in just two weeks. We had so little time that we simply added a second collar which unfolded over the top and serendipitously ended up looking very elegant, carrying the line that started down her front all the way up and into her delicate ear tips.
The travelling coat had skirts to it, but when Evangeline wasn't wearing it we had a second skirt that went with her jacket. It would have been too many layers and added too much bulk to have both skirts on Tauriel at once, so she always wore one or the other. We created a subtle leaf-like veining that organically traced its way across the suede and was applied by Johnny Brough and Daniel Falconer in the paint department at Weta Workshop."

Now, here's an interesting picture:

The jacket in picture D is the one that is pictured in the book, and she can be seen wearing just this jacket (with a brown top) when she is talking with Thranduil and with Kili in his cell. I had assumed that they simply added the leather cuirass on top of this same jacket, however, it also said removable skirts. Looking at picture D, you can see a piping/stitch detail that runs the length of the skirt, and starts all the way up past the waist seams, so I don't see how this is removable. If you look at pictures A and B, the skirt on her jacket does not have that seam travelling down the front of the skirt. They made it sound like they had so little time I thought they only made two jackets (one for her stunt double), but perhaps they made one full coat, and one short jacket that the skirts could be switch out (because there definitely is no deerskin skirt tails under her raw-silk travelling coat). Picture C is from a BRoll or production diary, I have no clue if this is showing the jacket without any kind of skirts, but I see no lines from the lacing otherwise. (It might be a version she wears with the stunt harness?)

Things that make costumers bang their heads. Now I can't decide how to build mine since I'd like to wear it both ways, and also with the travelling coat, but I see no way to make the skirts separate!Verdaerahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02623257976488143439noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-639743988911632694.post-27604361730757604902015-02-01T08:34:00.000-08:002015-02-01T08:35:00.292-08:00Quick Luna UpdateThis is the time of year where I am usually drafting patterns and collecting materials, so I usually have nothing to show for quite awhile, but I do have something small to show for myself!

Last year at Dragon Con, I took my Ravenclaw uniform I'd made in college and worn as a casual comfy costume into Luna Lovegood simply by adding a wig, Spectrespecs, butterbeer cork necklace and want, and strangely it was the most popular costume I wore all con. This year, I've decided to do a new Luna costume, her yellow dress she wore to the Weasley wedding in Deathly Hallows.

I have some awesome friends who have made clothes from the wedding so I'm excited to get to wear this with them at D*C this year. I don't plan to officially start working on the dress until after April, when I plan to have the White Witch finally done, but since I've been home sick all weekend, I've been having a Harry Potter marathon and had finally figured out how to make the radish earrings! I wanted to go the seed bead route like Evanna Lynch did for the movie. Finished one of two:

There is a larger bead in the center, and I had threaded an end pin through a smaller bead at the bottom which I attached an earwire to. The top half of the beads were put on using a thin wire, but I switched to beading thread for the second half so I could thread back through and try and secure some of the layers. I also used beading wire for the leaves. It's not perfect, but it's homemade like it should be :)Verdaerahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02623257976488143439noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-639743988911632694.post-72263517036443532222015-01-18T17:59:00.002-08:002015-01-18T17:59:45.342-08:00Etsy item updateStill chain mailing away, nothing new to report, but I've posted a few new items to Etsy. I rarely sell my costume pieces so I thought I'd post it on my blog.

I'm selling my original Hogwarts skirt I made in college, only worn for pictures. I since made a new one in a darker, thicker wool, but after seeing the exhibit, the skirt actually is a thinner wool like the one I used in the original. It's a lightweight wool, has a 26" waist (though is meant to sit a bit below the natural waist) and 19" from waistband to hem.

I also listed a couple of Garfield cotton prints, I have an old corset on there, and I'm going to be listing lots more fabric soon as I'm trying to clean out my stash.

Hopefully I have some costume news soon! I'm entering the world of wigmaking, so that'll be interesting to post about!Verdaerahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02623257976488143439noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-639743988911632694.post-29120494136774046122014-11-28T22:04:00.001-08:002014-11-28T22:04:31.280-08:00White Witch chainmail skirt progressI haven't posted on this in a long while! I honestly didn't expect it to take me more than a year to do, and when it did it turned into a long-term project I only picked up in the winter and work breaks. This is my version of Jadis, the White Witch from the Chronicles of Narnia.

The skirt is comprised of the fabric and chain base belt, 5 rectangular panels, and 5 rectangular gores, and I just finished gore 3 out of 5... 2 more to go! It now weighs 6lbs even.
My first attempt at a Regency corset was an obvious failure. I made this one back in college when I first started drafting my own patterns.

OLD VERSION

The busk just sat over everything making a big 'board' shape, and the bust gores weren't right at all.

Now that I know more about what I'm doing and researched more, I decided to go with some short stays instead of the full sized ones. I used some advice from The Oregon Regency Society which is fantastic, but I'm STILL not sure if this is fitting right or how to fix it.

This is what I have:

I made this out of cotton drill, which did not come in white so it is flatlined with white cotton, and also a white cotton lining layer. It has two bust gores now (that perhaps need to move closer to center?) I put steel boning on either side of the eyelets and cording under and to the side of the bust. I tried adding padding, but that just pushes the cups further away from me, and I can't figure out what needs to be adjusted to fix this issue. This is the original chemise I made in college, and I might need to make it a drawstring chemise instead. Does anyone have any advice for me on the fit of this? Sorry about the poor lighting and pics!

On the plus side, I dyed my Highbury Regency slippers from American Duchess today and made some cute bows to go with them!

I need help with a proper dress form!

My dilemma is this: I am more petite than available dress forms. My first was a dial-a-size dummy from JoAnns that served it's purpose, however, even when I dial it to its smallest size, the underbust is too big, and the bust isn't as high as mine. For this reason, and the rigid boobs, it's not really appropriate for historical wear. The standard, expensive dress forms don't go down to my size, and juvenile forms are too short-waisted to try padding them up to my size.

I have a Uniquely You form now, but even with the smallest form and the smallest cover, it's still too big. I've fit the cover as tight as I could get it and then some, but the dummy itself is still too big. I got enthusiastic and completely chopped the boobs off now to make falsies for corsetry, but I'm having so much trouble getting the dummy smaller. I've started shaving off foam, but it's leaving such a choppy surface. Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

(And duct-tape double isn't really an option, I don't want to pin into duct-tape.)

For some reason, it's very hard to get this separating thing with a smaller bust on these forms, this 'squish the foam to size' isn't really working for smaller shapes :p
I hadn't posted about this costume yet, this was my 'main' costume of this Dragon*Con year. I didn't have a very large, complicated build this year, I took a bit of a break from that, but I do love the more couture nature of this dress. If you don't recognize it, it's a dress worn by Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen in the last Hunger Games movie, Catching Fire.
This dress is made from laser-cut leather mounted on top of a metallic gold dress. I managed to find what is either a really good replica or the actual stuff used for the movie. I built the base dress first, and mounted the leather on top by spray adhering it to the dress and hand-tacking it over pretty much the entire thing.

The headdress I built out of pellon, buckram, and hatwire. I covered it in black dupioni, and I embroidered my own lace because I couldn't find one I liked. I sequined over that, and then added gold wires wrapped in fake hair.
The bracelet was interesting. I'm sure the original was somehow molded because it fits better over the thumb than mine, but I'm no metal worker. For this I took a sheet of craft aluminum and cut out the pattern I made with a dremel tool. I hand-filed the edges and polished it to a shine, and then added the leather strapping.
So, I wore this to Dragon*Con, which takes place in the Marriott Marquis hotel in Atlanta, where the tribute's living quarters scenes were filmed for the movie. I had a little fun with my friend Elendriel Alastair riding the elevator they filmed in. We also entered our costumes in the Young Adult Lit costume contest and got "Best Recreation". I also entered it in the Archon Masquerade (takes place in Illinois, and is the best Masquerade in the Midwest) and also got "Best Recreation"!
I taught myself how to ventilate wig lace so I was able to add a widow's peak to my wig to hide mine and I no longer have my own hair peeking out. I love this wig so much, but I have to learn how to totally replace the lace now because most wigs come with dark lace and I'm pasty. In either case, I'm really happy with how this whole look came out. I'm still trying to find a used brown leather jacket so I can make one that's closer to screen accurate. Here's the full costume from Dragon*Con 2014.

I just got back from Dragon*Con 2014 and it was a BLAST. I actually got to hang out on Thursday night this year, and I ran into so many people! Usually I search all con and only ran into a few, I think there were very few people I missed.

This year was a little unexpected for me, I usually only bring 4-5 costumes, this year I brought 8, some of them were old, or old with upgrades. I've actually taken a little break the last year or so from doing one big elaborate costume to doing a whole bunch of smaller ones, and though it felt so... wrong to not have a big show-stopper piece that I could enter in the big costume contest, I now feel I have enough in my costume closet that I have plenty of things I want to re-wear or use for group costuming when the opportunity comes up. I've also had the opportunity to have some older costumes photographed that I've never been able to properly share. I love bringing my pieces for Bryan Humphrey to photograph, he makes me look so good XD He is the Mad Scientist with a Camera

The first piece I'm going to share is an upgrade to an old costume. And I mean old. It's also my most worn costume. I made my Hogwarts Robes back in college, 6-7 years ago, when I first started learning how to properly pattern. It took months of studying and several drafts to make my shirt, skirt, and robe, and it's the only costume that old that I'm still proud enough of to wear. I picked Ravenclaw as my house (before it was cool, back in the day everyone only did Gryffindor or Slytherin) but didn't pick a character because I didn't believe I looked like anyone. This year, I decided to try something new and pick a character. I decided on Luna because, between her and Ginny, I already had Ravenclaw robes. I added an Arda wig which I made smaller in the cap. I'd like to add a lacefront so it looks better at the hairline. I ordered her replica wand from the Noble Collection, made her Butterbeer cork necklace, and found some spectraspecs in the vendor's hall which I wore to cover my glasses.

Out of all the costumes I wore all weekend, Luna was the only one that seemed to get stopped for pictures a lot. It felt so silly, after spending all this time and effort on other things, only to get such a gleeful reaction to an old costume upgrade. So here's the result. All pictures are by Bryan Humphrey.
I've always done a generic costume when I do troops, like Jedi, and I swore I was never going to do a classic Princess Leia because I don't look like Carrie Fisher (other than height, we're the same). Last year at the Star Wars night at the Cardinals game, since we didn't have a Leia, they had one of their employees wear a halloween costume and everyone loved it, so I realized it doesn't matter that I don't look like Carrie so long as I'm recognizable. I decided to go ahead and make it, and here's the end result.
I made the boots, I'll probably do a more in-depth write up about it later, I basically built the boot shaft and attached it to a pair of vintage boots.
First off, I'm parting with my Victorian Corset. It ended up being a little long in the torso for me, so I'm letting it go.

That's right, I'm adding to my Katniss collection. I absolutely love this dress from Catching Fire, and I'm glad that it was custom made, as most of her wardrobe were designer items I can't afford. I don't have many good pictures of the whole dress standing, and you never see it in the movie except when the chariot first pulls into the Tribute Parade. I have a flickr album for my Katniss research, here's a link to the parade research album. Click on for the start of my build.

This dress, we've determined, is a laser-cut leather over a metallic gold foundation. It's short in the front and trains in the back. She also wears a bracelet from darklandsberlin.com and some demon shoes (seriously, there's no way to talk in those). I forget who makes them, but they are uber expensive and I don't think Jennifer Lawrence was comfortable in them. The only shot of her in them is in the special features, and she's shifting her weight as if her feet hurt her. All further film shots show her in wedge sneakers. You never see her boots in the movie.

Since these both are designer items I can't afford, I'm going to try making them, and finding some gladiator-style shoes. In the mean time, I have the base dress done. Trish Summerville, the costume designer, released a Capitol-inspired collection that included something similar to the parade dress. I used the seamlines from this to come up with the pattern for the base dress. Since the best, non-cheap-looking metallic gold I could find was a very thin stretch material, I wanted to flat-line it to a cotton fabric. I went with a thin twill so it would have a sturdy base and nice drape. The top has built-in cups, so I basically deconstructed a bra and built it in. I flattened the front of the skirt after I took this picture, sorry I didn't take a better one!
I still want to fiddle with the collar shape, but that doesn't get attached until the leather is layed on.
Now this leather I admit was my tax-refund splurge for the year. Usually I treat myself to a higher-priced costume piece or materials during refund time than I normally would through the year, and that was it. It's gorgeous stuff, and I bought 4 hides of it. Thankfully, I'm skinny and short, I can get away with using less fabric. Looking at Jennifer Lawrence's dress, there are no seam lines in the leather. Since leather doesn't fray, I believe the base dress was built first, and the leather applied on top, trimmed along motifs and carefully worked around the curves. I put my base dress on my dummy, and put some temp. spray adhesive on the back of my leather and stuck it down along the flat, center-front parts of the dress and carefully pinned it through the open parts to hold it in place. I started tacking it by taking matching thread and stitching through part of the floral motif around the dress to hopefully keep it controlled. I've got the front part stitched out and haven't tackled the cups yet, which will be... interesting.

I've got until the end of August to finish this, but I think it'll be done before that. I scrubbed plans for the big Katniss Wedding Dress for Dragon*Con as I don't think I have time or funds to finish it before D*C, so this is one of 4 new costumes for this D*C, the rest of which require a little finishing and prop work, but otherwise I'm in good shape for D*C. I might get insane and add a simple one into the mix, but this year I hope to not be sewing everything last minute. The other 3 costumes are pretty much in a wearable state. Will update you all on this project as I go, right now it's all tedious hand sewing.
I decided to take some dummy pictures today and just post it. I'm planning on wearing it to Dragon*Con this year, and am fixing up my Singer treadle to hopefully sew through leather. Once I can find some suitable leather I plan to make her hunting coat from scratch. So, in the mean time, here's the finished piece.

I have to say, I'm liking having multiple deadlines during the year instead of just the one for Dragon*Con, it's forcing me to focus on things one or two at a time and get them finished for an event, so I won't have to try and finish *everything* in August.

This time, the project is Merida from Pixar's "Brave" and I'd like to finish the dress by Memorial Day weekend for Ren Faire.

I didn't plan on doing this one when the movie first came out, especially as everyone seemed to be doing this gown, but I really fell in love with the movie. I'm also of Scottish and Irish descent, and since I'm strawberry blonde I have very pale skin, so this works for me. I decided I'm going to try and do this in a more historically accurate fashion. Not completely, of course, because Disney never does strictly accurate... Merida's gown seems to be a mix between a classic Kirtle or Cotehardie, with Italian Renaissance-style sleeves (no doubt because she'd have to have good arm movement for shooting a bow, which her cotehardie-style dress during the Games proved ill-equipped for). Princess seams weren't really accurate for this era, so I'll be doing a more rectangular style dress with triangle gores, so it has a more medieval feel to it. I've seen many versions of this dress with fabric strips attaching the sleeves, but there's no historical gown that does it that way either; it's done with ties.

To start with, I decided wool and linen would be the most accurate fabrics for the Scottish Highlands. I bought a couple yards of wool for the dress itself and dyed this first. This was rather difficult as you're supposed to boil wool to dye it, but I had no pot big enough to hold all the wool, the weight of the water, and put it over a fire. Best I could do was put it in the washing machine on hot and add boiling water. I had used Spruce dye from Dharma Trading, and had intended for this to be more on the blue side, but it didn't come out as blue as my test strip. It was still a beautiful green/blue color, and it matches some of the screen shots used where she's in good lighting (the promo pics are more blue/teal than it is in the movie anyway). Later, I dyed some wool yarn which I am using to make cording.
I had a hard time getting my camera to capture the color, it's a darker shade than what shows.
I wanted to build the chemise first so I could make sure the necklines matched up, so I got some very fine linen for that. I had a dilemma though... the chemise neck is clearly gathered, but there's no evidence of a casing, or smocking, or anything to show how it does this (just like she has no seams or closures :p ) I also wasn't sure how I'd do a flared skirt and control the bulk of the extra fabric if I had a chemise with a gathered neckline. In the end, I built it like my Hobbit Chemise by gathering/smocking a rectangle and applied a bias strip on top of that to control it, and putting a flat strap on the shoulders. I put a casing in the waist to gather it to control the fabric, and put gores in the skirt so it would be the same shape as the over dress' skirt.

It's sleeveless because I learned when I did my Italian Renaissance gown, when you have tight sleeves that show the chemise underneath, and you want the chemise to poof a certain way, it's not only hard to put the sleeves on if they're separate, it's hard to control the poofage, so I'm going to attach those directly into the gown so they stay where I want them.

And for fun, shoe shot!! Merida's shoes are ankle high ghillies, but I already had these knee-high ghillies and I love them, so why not put them to use?

Here's a little preview of the new project I've been working on for Dragon*Con this year. I decided to make Black Widow from the new Captain America 2 movie. This costume is about 75% done, I had to rush to get it wearable for C2E2 in Chicago this weekend, so I don't have all my props, and the ones I DO have are a little janky. The belt is temporary and the boots I threw together in 2 hours, but they actually turned out fairly decent. I'll post more pictures later, but here's one of a few I got from this weekend.

I also wore my USO Girl from the first Captain America movie (it was a very Cap weekend!) today, which I'm not sure I ever posted on here when I finished it last year. The credit goes to Kathy Kaydee for organizing the group, including the pattern and coordinating all the materials so those of us who make them all coordinate. My grandma pin-curled my hair for me last night so it's pretty authentic! I got called 'adorable' all day, which a girl loves to hear *g* More pictures and info to come later.
My companions are Stacie, Jim, and Beth of the Rebel Legion/501st. Beth, on the right, won 2nd place in the C2E2 costume contest for her husband, Trent's, glorious hand-beaded Ming the Merciless costume :D

An update, I did finish my Weird Thing (my Katniss Cowl) but we never got another snow and I wasn't able to find a photographer... I don't even have a blank wall to use to take a picture :p I'll eventually get one up, but spring is finally upon us, so no nice wintery shots :p

This post is more for a brainstorming session. I like to dye my own fabric for my projects, and I use yardage of silk quite a lot. At the moment, I'm using a load of wool for my Merida costume.

To use acid dye for silks and wools, you have to bring it to a near boil and maintain the temperature for the dyes to work most efficiently. I have the largest pot I could find, and I can usually dye a couple yards of silk in it if I use the barbeque to boil the water, but things like velvet and wool I'd have to chop up the fabric into 1 - 1.5 yard sections, and that's a pain as each dye bath would have to be the exact same formula of dye powder, water, and temperature - hard to maintain on a grill. I've tried dyeing in the washing machine, with the hottest setting and adding boiling water, but it's still hard to maintain. I'm trying to brainstorm what I can use as a dye pot that can take heat and large quantities of water. My dad is building me a firepit with something built in to hold a big dye pot. It is best to be steel because iron or copper would react with the dye solution. I was thinking of those big galvanized steel tubs, but I fear those wouldn't be able to take the heat or weight. Does anyone have any good ideas for large dye pots?
Katniss Cowl ProgressLast progress update, hopefully the next pic I can share will be a nice photo of me in the whole costume! I only have to do the vertical braids to fill in the front section, and then some finishing touches. I'm going to tack down the neck a bit on one side to force the slouch because it's supposed to collapse a little over there.

First, the original for reference:

And where I'm at:

May or may not be bigger than hers, but oh well, making this up as I go along. Next up is the body, those braids will follow the long one draped around the front. I can see why the original took Maria Dora and an assistant a couple weeks to do, this is pretty labor intensive. So far I've used 3.5 skeins of yarn. A lot of people have said it's impractical, but when I tried it on to pin up the long braid I got quite warm, I'll have to try it out during the next polar vortex XD
Verdaerahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02623257976488143439noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-639743988911632694.post-69319055588887898202014-01-04T21:10:00.001-08:002014-01-12T09:20:22.746-08:00So I'm making a weird thing; Katniss' cowl from Catching FireI can't rave enough about Hunger Games: Catching Fire! I've seen it 4 times in the theater so far. They are very true to the book and it's so perfect. I, of course, want to make all of Katniss' costumes. I've started with one piece though, since I can add it to my original Katniss Hunting costume:

I just have to put black pants with it to make it accurate for Catching Fire. She will wear the jacket in Mockingjay also, and if I can get my old Singer treadle machine working and buy a hide of leather, I want to make the jacket proper. This lucky ebay find, though, has most of the appropriate shapes. There is one other addition to the Catching Fire version of this costume, and that is the cowl:

It was made by Maria Dora specifically for Katniss, based on a design she had already done. It was altered to be more practical for shooting. Apparently the internet is going nuts over this piece. If you search "Katniss Cowl", you will get hundreds of results of people trying to make their own, it's pretty remarkable. Sometimes I take on a costume I wasn't initially planning on doing simply because I think I figured out how it was made. That's the fun I have with costume making is figuring out the puzzle. Now let me first say that I am not a knitter. I only know the basic knit stitch, and I taught myself the basic crochet stitch for this.

I can't tell yet if I'm making it too big or not since I don't have much of the body done, but I'm kind of proud of the technique I've worked up (and I have no clue what I'm doing, I feel like freakin' MacGuyver here) Hopefully I can get this done before the last snow of the year and arrange some kind of photoshoot!

Also? It makes a great cat bed.

-edit 01/12/14- I'd shortened the end of the "y" and added the next row of braiding...
